This launch caps a wild year for OpenClaw. The project started as Clawdbot before evolving and securing backing from OpenAI. In February 2026, creator Peter Steinberger announced he had joined the AI giant. Then OpenClaw went viral around MoltBook, a social media site supposedly populated entirely by agents. Researchers later discovered humans were impersonating agents there, but the spectacle put OpenClaw on the map.

How It Actually Works
Here is what makes this different. Your phone does not run the AI. Instead, the app pairs with your self-hosted OpenClaw Gateway using a QR code or setup code. Think of the Gateway as your personal routing layer. It connects phone requests to AI agents and the tools they use.
